The Base is located in North American in what used to be the United States. It's located nearly a thousand miles from either ocean. 002. Water There are no large rivers in the city or near the Base. The closest river is two days walk away. There is a creek in the forest, though, and a small well on the Base. Loners in the city will have to get water from rain, which sometimes must be boiled and cleaned. 003. Seasons The area which this site focuses around has four distinct seasons: rainy springs, dry and hot summers, chilly autumns, and snowy winters.[/ul] Timing For the sake of roleplaying, a single season will last two real life months. A season, in this case, is three months. This will most likely be sped up when we are more established. 002. Aging Every six months, a character is a whole year older. It is not up to the staff to keep track of a character's aging. We will, however, alert you when each spring begins. It's not super necessary to keep track of when your character ages. So long as your character isn't the same age three or four years later, we don't mind. 003. Liquid Time We do allow liquid time. For those of you who don't know, this means that a character can be in multiple threads at once. It's up to the individual member to keep track of what happened in each thread. Usually, the thread that was started first occurs before the one started after.[/ul] Odds & Ends We request that if your character has a special item bought from the store, it is listed in the account's signature. It's also preferred that you put in the signature of the account if the character is a shapeshifter or has a familiar. Kindly list the species for shapeshifters, and both species and name for familiars. 002. Disabilities At the moment, we are not allowing the creation of characters with physical or mental disabilities or illnesses. This includes blind, deaf, or mute characters and characters with personality or mental disorders. Physical (and perhaps emotional) scarring is allowed, though. 003. Rejoining the Base A character can leave the base at any time and become a loner again. If your character decides to do this, please PM a staff member so they can change the status of your account. However, if a character leaves and then later tries to rejoin, s/he will have to draw a new job and start leveling up all over. (There are exceptions to this, primarily for plot purposes.) 004. Traveling It is possible for characters to leave the Base and the city altogether and go traveling across the continent. However, we will not roleplay this here. If a character leaves, the account will be made inactive. If you wish to have the character return, just PM a staff member and they will change the account to loner. 005. Money It should be noted that money is almost never used anymore. To most surviving humans, coin and cash money is little more than bits of metal or decorative paper. Instead, to acquire new items, most people will trade or barter.[/ul] [/blockquote]

FAQ
Are Loners always alone? Of course not! The term "loner" simply means that the character is not a Resident of the Base. It is entirely plausible that several loners might travel together or take care of each other. Some might even choose to form their own group independent of the Base.
Why do you prefer characters between the ages of 15 and 21? In this setting, the life expectancy has dropped back to an average of about forty-five to sixty. Because of this, characters over the age of 21 are very likely to be settling down with families. For the purposes of role-play, we wanted to avoid that as much as possible. Keep in mind that while some characters may have the same maturity levels of present day 15-21-year-olds, many may be quite a bit more mature than present standards.
Why are there no adults at the Base? The Base is not a town. It's more of a way station for young people separated from their familial adults. Young people who are firmly attached and protected by their adult relatives would most likely find little interest in the system of the Base. Young people who have been struggling on their own, however, would be decidedly attracted to the protection it offers.
Are wizards the only ones who can learn magic? Any character can choose to take levels in wizarding. (Note: Currently only Residents can study magic, but we encourage you to be creative and find away around this.) If a Resident is assigned a job other than wizard, they may still complete the requirements to level in Wizard anyway. Wizard as an extra job is not listed on a characters account until the character has reached level 2 or higher.
How does a character learn magic? In-character, Residents can learn magic by studying in the library and meditating. There are a number of books in the library about spells and magic techniques. For the time being, please only use the spells listed on the magic thread.
Out of character, a character learns magic by leveling them up as a wizard. Any character, loners included, is capable of using the level 1 spells. The spells assigned to higher levels can only be used after you have reached that level. After reaching a higher level, the character may use any lower level spells as well. For example, a level 5 wizard may use the spells from levels 5, 4, 3, 2, and 1.
I have three in-progress threads and my character became level 2. If I finish those threads, do they count towards level 3? In most cases, no. If you have special circumstances, you may PM a staff member about it. In almost all cases, a thread must be started after you reach a certain level in order to count for it. We are somewhat lenient, however. If a thread is posted the same day as you level up, we will almost always count it towards the new level.
Do I have to level my character? No! Leveling characters is entirely optional, but it can give you ideas of where to post and which characters to interact with more.
Can I level my character in a different job than the one assigned? There are only two ways of leveling your character in a job other than the one assigned to you. Option one is leveling as a wizard, which is acceptable for all Residents. Option two is taking a single level in a different job only because it is required to level in your primary job. There might be some creative ways around this, but that's up to you to discover.
Are loners allowed on base? Usually, loners are not allowed on the Base. There are generally only two instances in which a loner would be allowed to enter the Base. First off, if a loner is injured, Residents might take him/her back to the Base for recovery. Second, a loner may enter the Base if they are specifically planning on becoming a Resident and drawing a job from the urn in the Piano Room.
What if the other member/character never replies to my thread? Can I still count it towards a level? If your thread becomes inactive because of the other member, the thread can still occasionally count towards a level for your character. If you have posted in the thread five or more times, it may count towards a level. Otherwise, we usually expect threads to be entirely complete in order to use them for leveling up.
